Over the last 3 years the prevalence of coyotes in urban areas is on the rise! Coyotes, foxes and other wildlife have ventured into urban areas due to their normal habitat being disturbed! Coyotes in urban neighborhoods is a cause for concern, especially with small children and pets. A few years ago there was a confirmed case of rabies in a fox. Rabies is a deadly disease that can be transmitted to humans! Fortunately, there has been no confirmed cases of rabies in coyotes. However, coyotes in back yards can pose a serious threat! What can you do to protect yourself and your family?Remember, coyotes are being displaced from their natural habitat and they are hungry and looking for food! We have seen pets attacked by coyotes, please be aware of this problem!
- Fencing around the perimeter of the house
- Outdoor cameras and motion detectors
- Accompanying small children and pets in the backyard
- If you see a coyote in your backyard do not confront it
- If you are in your yard and a coyote appears, make a loud noise banging on metal trash cans to scare it off
- Call Baldwin or Mobile County Health Department-Animal Control to report siting
- Make sure your pets are vaccinated and
- microchipped
- Make sure garbage can lids are on tight
- Do not feed pets outside.
